Two Years with Hyundai on the Calico Dry Lake Bed

The Calico Dry Lake Bed does not have walls, it has a horizon. Hyundai has taken us out to the Mojave two years running for the Electrified Road Trip, and both times the job was the same: tow a polished Airstream out onto cracked earth an hour from anywhere and make it look like it belongs there.

2024: an influencer road trip to Vegas

On September 19, 2024 we parked the Airstream photo booth beside a Hyundai IONIQ 5 on the lake bed. No power, no shade, no walls - just the trailer, the car, and a few hundred square miles of nothing behind them.

Inside, the booth ran against a painted Joshua Tree mural built for the activation. That is the advantage of a trailer over a backdrop on a stand: the environment is controlled, air conditioned and on-brand, while the desert stays outside where it looks best.

Hyundai ran the Electrified Road Trip as an influencer trip: a group of creators driving IONIQ 5s out to Las Vegas for the iHeartRadio Music Festival, with the Calico ghost town as a stop along the way. Our booth was the set piece waiting for them when they pulled in. AJ McLean and Lance Bass were among the group, and posted from the booth to their own accounts, AJ’s as a paid partnership with Hyundai.

Every print came out branded Hyundai Electrified Road Trip and #PoweredByIONIQ. That is the whole argument for putting a booth inside a brand activation rather than beside one: the branding travels with the photo onto the talent’s own feed, where the audience already is.

2025: back on the same lake bed

Hyundai brought us back on September 18, 2025. Same lake bed, same trailer, a year of desert dust in between - but a new backdrop inside. The Joshua Tree mural came out and a neon speaker design went in, so the second year did not just repeat the first. That is worth knowing if you are booking a returning activation: the trailer is the constant, the interior is the thing you change.

This is the kind of booking we build for: a remote location and a trailer that looks at home anywhere you tow it. When a brand chooses a dry lake bed over a ballroom, we say yes, hitch up, and drive. Twice.
